As we eat food, some of it tends to stay behind stuck in our teeth. These particles, if left in place, produce bacteria that lead to a number of oral health problems. Additionally, many people neglect proper dental care, causing gum disease is much more common than you think. At Emerald Coast Family Dentistry, Dr. Jennifer Georgiades D.M.D. in Pensacola, FL, is here to help her patients understand the importance of oral hygiene.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease starts when we eat, for small food particles are often left behind inside nooks, cracks, and cavities in our teeth. If these food particles are left there they develop bacterial growth. This bacterial growth cause your gums to swell, also known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, it causes your gums to become inflamed and easily bleed during tooth brushing or flossing. At this point, the damage done is still reversible. The issues occur if gingivitis is left untreated, it will advance to periodontitis. Periodontitis is when the inner layer of the gum and the bone actually pull away from the teeth and form pockets and spaces between the teeth and gums where food and debris can lodge and cause further bacterial growth. As this disease progresses it eventually leads to the gum tissue and bone is destroyed and eventual tooth loss.
